Training for Weight Loss
Many people believe that cutting calories is the key to weight loss. This is true for people who are eating too many calories. Alternatively, many people are living in starvation mode by not consuming enough calories to meet nutrition and metabolic needs. Either way, restricting calories over an extended period of time will lead to a slower metabolic rate, resulting in accelerated weight gain once normal caloric intake resumes.
Another aspect of weight loss often overlooked is the importance of exercise. When people lose weight quickly as a result of calorie restriction, they tend to lose muscle mass at an accelerated rate. This leads to a higher body fat composition in excess of their pre-diet body fat composition when the weight is regained. Exercise is require to build and keep lean muscle mass throughout the reduction period.
Gary has worked with numerous individuals that are trying to lose weight. He believes that caloric restriction sets people up for failure, and causes a pattern called the yo-yo effect. The yo-yo effect also known as the weight cycle is defined by Kelly D. Brownell, a leading scientist, as a cyclical loss and gain of weight. Brownell believes “The reasons for yo-yo dieting are varied but often include embarking upon a hypocaloric diet that was initially to extreme”. He believes that restrictive weight loss programs start a cycle of weight loss followed by weight gain.
Gary develops programs and works with clients on an ongoing basis who are interested in losing weight. He also offers a five session weight loss orientation program for those interested in learning Gary’s weight loss techniques. The orientation program provides a complete understand of what is necessary to achieve long-term weight loss and a copy of his book Weight Loss Fitness and Health Made Easy.
