Gary believes that exercise and healthy living can lesson or reverse many health issues. During his more than 20 year career, he has seen the positive impact that exercise, proper nutrition and other lifestyle choices have in helping people regain their health or minimize the impact of different diseases.
- For example, individuals with osteoporosis and osteopenia can stop further bone loss, increase bone density and decrease their risk of falling. People living with Type1 and Type 2 diabetes can slow the progression or successfully manage the disease. People suffering with osteoarthritis may improve their symptoms and mobility.
- Studies suggest that cancer patients should include exercise from the time of diagnosis, during and after treatment. People living with hypertension (high blood pressure) can reduce their chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Individuals living with Parkinson’s disease or syndrome, myasthenia gravis or multiple sclerosis issues may be able to slow the progression of these diseases while improving their quality of life.
- Recovering stroke patients should continue exercising after they have finished their initial rehabilitation if they want to improve mobility and their balance. These issues can often be improved or sometimes be resolved by retraining the central nervous system.
- Lower body swelling may be resolved by activating the lymphatic system and low testosterone levels in men can be increased through exercise and dietary changes. It has been shown that weight loss and exercise may reduce issues associated with atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea, that exercise can slow the progression of macular degeneration and that metabolic syndrome can be reversed.
- Individuals with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis may be able to slow the progression of this disease if the proper exercises are incorporated into their program. Studies suggest that women may be able to reduce the number of hot flashes. Recent studies suggest that exercise helps early stage Alzheimer’s patients slow the progression of this health problem. As well, seniors of all ages with a variety of health problems will benefit from exercise and resistance training.
Gary created and spent a number of years teaching Working With Special Populations: Osteoporosis, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia and Other Physical Problems, a specialized certification course to personal trainers and other health specialists. The eight hour workshop and certification course was designed to provide industry professionals an understanding of how to work with and help people of all ages that have a variety of health problems.
