Post-Concussion Syndrome is defined as a set of symptoms that may continue for weeks, months, or a year or more after a concussion. For many years, this health problem was not understood. Often seen in athletes, numerous people other than athletes have post-concussion syndrome. Symptoms can present in a variety of ways and are often different among people that have post-concussion syndrome. Some people recover quickly, while others may have ongoing difficulties for an extended period, or for the remainder of their life. People with post-concussion syndrome often struggle with issues involving their personal relationships. People that do not have this problem are often unable to understand why someone looks fine, but are having trouble at a normal level. This can be a source of frustration for individuals that have this health issue.
One of the limiting factors of post-concussion syndrome can be an inability to exercise without having post-concussion symptoms. A variety of symptoms may be present when a person returns to exercising after having a concussion. There are testing protocols that have evolved during the past number of years that can determine whether a person can resume exercising. Once a person has been given permission to start exercising, does not mean that they will not be faced with exercise induced symptoms. These symptoms can vary from person to person. Some individuals may never be able to return to their previous exercise intensity levels.
When returning to exercise, a slow approach is highly recommended. The participant should exercise at a level that does not induce symptoms. If symptoms become present, the person should stop exercising or reduce the intensity to see if the symptoms stop. It can take many months to adapt to the exercise program. Some forms of exercise may not be tolerable at any time in the future.
In my opinion, a slow approach should be taken. A concussion is a brain injury and can affect people in a variety of ways. This is a health problem that is often overlooked or missed by individuals.
